Several African Countries Speak English

Welcome to the African Gourmet African languages 101 lessons.

There are about 2000 languages spoken on the African continent, with perhaps as many as 8000 dialects. Africa represents about a third of the living languages of the world. English is the official language of numerous African countries. Nearly all of Africa countries have more than one official language, South Africa for example has eleven official languages. Let’s begin your introduction into one of the oldest African languages of the African country Uganda, Luganda (lu-gan-duh).

Luganda (lu-gan-duh) 101
Luganda is spoken in the landlocked African county of Uganda; however, English is the official language.
Some common Luganda words are:
1. Angu- Light
2. Enkoko- Chicken
3. Ffe- We
4. Okufumba- To Cook
5. Doola- Dollar
6. Ecupa- Bottle
7. Laba- Look
8. Lumonde- Sweet Potatoes
9. Ttooke- Green Banana
10. Tono- Small
