“However far a stream flows, it
never forgets its origin”
-African Proverb

The number two in French is pronounced deux. The official language of the African country Benin is French. The Fon people of Benin believe twins are two separate parts of the same human being. Naturally twins are treasured and are a beloved part of society even after death. In some African countries infant mortality rates are high therefore it is easy to see why twins are a gift to the Fon woman of Benin. There is always emphasis on family providing love and support to twins. When one twin dies a sculptured figure symbolizing the deceased is cared for by a family member as if the person was still alive. Traditional African ceremonies such as the Fon twin ceremony are a special part of Fon life.
