What Defines a Fruit?

Author: Peter Gitundu

There is almost a universal confusion between a fruit and a vegetable. Some of the products got from trees qualify as vegetables, while others difficult to classify. Many people believe that vegetables are supposed to be cooked before eating, while their counterparts are eaten raw. Here is where the debate begins because, there are those vegetables that do not require to be cooked before consumption. Do they qualify as fruits then?   If we look at the botanical definitions, we find that a fruit is defined as the ripened reproductive body of seed plant.

The reproductive body is the ovary and this therefore translates to mean that the ripened ovary is the fruit. The ovary ripens after fertilization with a male seed. Many of the ripened ovaries contain seeds in them and the seeds, when planted, are what give rise to a tree or plant that bears the ovaries.   There are other definitions that refer to these products but they are not botanical in nature. In social life, people talk of the consequences of ones actions as the fruits of his labor, be they good or bad. It is not uncommon to hear of a persons success being termed as the product of his labor. In the spiritual realm, people do refer to acts of goodness and all related virtues as fruits of the Holy Spirit.

While this is debatable, it is not difficult to conclude that the products must be visible through ones lifestyle for them to be classified as such.  Back to the botanical definition, these products are recognized by their ability to produce seeds. However, not all of them contain seeds and some are actually known to be false. For example, the fig tree produces some products that look like they are edible, sweet but are not in real sense. Most of those used in cooking have simply been given the name culinary fruits.

The Reasons Why You Must Go To The Continent Of Africa

Author: Aria Scherer

When the majority of persons picture the continent of Africa, they posess a preconceived notion that there are savage tribes all over the places and that the whole place is overwhelmed with ferocious animals. Sure that might have been the truth centuries ago, but presently, most portions of the continent of African are no different than Europe or America. You simply need to know where to go to. In fact, the continent of Africa is surprisingly a fantastic place to travel to. It has sandy beaches, high-dollar accommodations, great restaurants, and the hospitality in the continent of Africa simply cannot be surpassed. So dont scratch the continent of Africa off your vacation wishes just yet.

African vacations are trully a rather logical alternative for persons in the Northern Hemisphere because the continent of Africa’s annual seasons occur at opposite times in the year. That means that when it is 45 degrees Fahrenheit outside and you genuinely desire to go somewhere warmer, all you need to do is go to the continent of Africa because there it’ll be 80 degrees Fahrenheit or maybe even better. And obviously the same stuff will go on during American summer times. You don’t ever have to stress about finding a place thats just the right temperature because the only thing you need to do is go over the Equator.

From a relaxation aspect, African resorts are really fairly accomodative and could be just as fancy as hotels in other places. The sights in the continent of Africa are absolutely stunning, and you could dicover a lot of beach-side hotels there. Any persons that you come across will probably be highly kind and cordial, and the staff at the hotels and resorts you stay at will be just as accomodative. The eating is excellent; the shopping is fantastic; the people are growing; need I go on? So throw those ancient perspectives of the continent of Africa to the side and say hello to a modern view. Africa might really be the most wonderful vacation destination for you.

Festa d’Africa (Africa festival)

Rome: Festa d’Africa (Africa festival), 8 – 15 September 2009

Author: Michele De Capitani

Many features of African art and culture are not well-known all around the world, and when we think about the black continent our mind goes to its wonderful, exotic landscapes, to its rhythms and to its colours. However, contemporary African art and culture are definitely worth being known and supported, both for their aesthetic value and because they give us the possibility to discover another point of view and a different world view.

One of the best ways to discover African culture is taking part in “Festa d’Africa” (Africa Festival), an event that will take place in Civitavecchia, Ladispoli, Sacrofano and Rome from the 21st of August to the 15th of September 2009. The 8th edition of the festival will end in the eternal city: travel to Rome from the 8th to the 15th of September and learn something more about African theatre, dance, art and music. The festival, which always attracts a number of visitors in 4 stars hotels in Rome, is meant to help the dialogue between different peoples and cultures and to make people learn something more about what is different from themselves, because only knowledge can destroy barriers and incomprehension. No wonder that the keyword of the event is dialogue: it is only through dialogue that we can listen to and understand other points of view, and dialogue implies being willing to respect and to accept different opinions. The word dialogue is meant as dialogue between different forms of art, dialogue through art and dialogue as an instrument to build peaceful relations between peoples. All forms of art are powerful means of expression and communication, which can be used to deal with problems of vital importance.

Festa d’Africa is not only meant as a festival of African art and culture, but also as an important chance to make people know some of the most urgent issues of the black continent: just to make an example, the festival will host the screenings of the movie “Mooladè” and of the docu-fiction “Vite in cammino”, which deal with the serious problem of female genital mutilation.

The programme of the festival includes dance and theatre shows, screenings of films and documentaries, performances of singers and bands, but also debates and discussions, in order to go deeply into all the features of African culture. On the 8th of September there will be a debate on the importance of music in African society: in Africa music is not only entertainment, it is also a powerful tool to criticize the society and to give advice to the community, and it becomes people consciousness. The festival will host other interesting debates on African dance (“Dogon: the water dance”) and cinema, in particular on Nigerian film industry, the so-called “Nollywood”, which is now considered as the second more productive film industry in the world.
